Oscars 2023 Countdown: Ke Huy Quan-ology
In many ways, Ke Huy Quan’s red carpet journey this year has been the most fun for us to watch and document. His story has almost instantly passed into Hollywood legend: the child star with the iconic roles who dropped out of acting and established a well-regarded behind-the-scenes career, makes a triumphant return to the screen in his middle age and snags an Oscar nomination out of it. Who couldn’t love a story like that?

But as people who write about this sort of thing every day, it was especially gratifying for us to watch how he navigated the red carpet. Unlike most stars who originated last century, he seems to have arrived on the modern red carpet with an extremely well-developed understanding of how to navigate it.

All of his appearances have been impeccable.
At the Unforgettable Gala for the Asian-American Awards in Gucci
In every instance, he rises to the occasion in a relatively narrow range of menswear styles, most of which are classic in tone.
At the Golden Globes in Thom Browne
He never gets the fit or the details wrong.
At the Critics Choice Awards in Giorgio Armani
He expresses himself, but only using the very finest and high-quality of pieces to do it. He gets what you’re supposed to do on a red carpet.

There’s also a restrained sense of playfulness and youthfulness to his style, which has always struck us as smart. He’s on his way back to a killer career and you want to brand yourself as a viable creative and financial prospect, which means youthfulness and modernity.
But always a sense of the classic.
At the Producer Guild of America Awards
We don’t expect any sort of major surprise from him on Sunday night. Like most of his ensembles this year, we expect it to be part professional announcement, part victory lap.

And all of the details will be perfect.
